Piano, Keyboard, & Organ
This last of the surviving C major sonatas was written during Haydn’s second London sojourn in 1794/95 for the pianist Terese Jansen, Mrs Bartolozzi. This revised Henle Urtext edition uses skilfully set-up ossia staves and is also provided with new fingering by Christian Zacharias. The accompanying texts reflect the latest research from the Haydn Complete Edition.

The piano does not lack for virtuoso showpieces. But this Etude from Scriabin’s Op. 8 definitely ranks among the highest in terms of popularity. A Horovitz concert without this explosive study in octaves would have been almost inconceivable. Henle offers this Urtext edition of the dazzling Etude with fingering by world-renowned pianist Boris Giltburg.

Bach’s French Suites are among his most popular keyboard works. In this revised Henle Urtext, editor Ullrich Scheideler presents the complicated source situation with exemplary clarity. Suite no. None other than Johann Sebastian Bach arranged Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s well-known Stabat mater. Bach replaced the old liturgical sequence of the original with a rhymed version in German of the 51st Psalm, Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden. The presented edition now offers Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden for choir by adding male voices based on the basso continuo as well as Bach’s original viola part.

Puccini wrote the cantata I figli d’Italia bella in 1877 for a competition held by the province of Lucca. Considered lost for many years, a set of parts turned up about twenty years ago in which, however, the vocal solo was missing. Then in 2019, an anonymous and previously unattributed manuscript was identified as an autograph of Puccini. It became clear that this was the missing complete score!

Instrumental Solos
From the almost inexhaustible pool of flute duets, editors Elisabeth Weinzierl and Edmund Wächter discovered lesser-known treasures from four centuries for this collection in order to make them accessible to the interested flute world. As authentic sources as possible served as models for the compositions: autographs, early copies or first printings that made it possible to approximate the original text.

This short yet elegant piece, with its A-B-A structure and an emphasis on playing "avec élégance", epitomizes the "genre piece" or "salon piece" style. Throughout, Pierné's Canzonetta reflects the embodiment of French good taste and has been interpreted with skill and artistry by esteemed clarinettists, making it a testament to Pierné's contributions to this genre.

Wayne Shorter was a legendary American jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader. Sherwood Concerto for soprano saxophone (or clarinet) and orchestra was premiered by Nicolas Prost and Sébastien Paindestre in New York City, N.Y. February, 22 2023. The reduction for soprano saxophone and piano was arranged by composer and pianist Olivier Calmel.

This wonderfully lyrical work is one of his most cheerful creations. The musical text of this revised Urtext edition is based on the recently-published volume within the New Brahms Complete Edition, which guarantees the highest degree of scholarly precision. Frank Peter Zimmermann and Martin Helmchen, masters of their respective instruments, provide helpful fingerings.

Despite clearly orienting himself around the quartets of Viennese Classicism, Verdi succeeds here in making an independent and ingenious contribution to the genre. This Henle Urtext edition is based on the Italian first edition, though important secondary sources such as the autograph score and the French first edition have also been consulted.

With his op. 87, Dvorák delivered a challenging and mature work in which a mastery of form is combined with memorable themes and surprising harmonic turns, leading it quickly to conquer the hearts of both performers and audiences. The engraver’s model for the first edition is lost; but together with the first edition the autograph survives as a second source for this critical edition.
