New Release Round-up, New Release Round-Up - 12th July 2024

Mythos, Pelléas et Mélisande, Brahms Complete Symphonies, Sommernachtskonzert 2024Today's new releases include ballads by Schumann and Loewe from Konstantin Krimmel & Ammiel Bushakevitz, Schoenberg's and Fauré's responses to Maurice Maeterlinck's Pelléas et Mélisande from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra & Paavo Järvi, Brahms's complete symphonies from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe & Yannick Nézet-Séguin in Baden-Baden, and the Wiener Philharmoniker's Sommernachtskonzert from Schönbrunn Palace (conducted by Andris Nelsons, with Lise Davidsen as guest soloist).

Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Yannick Nézet-Séguin

These performances of Brahms's symphonies were recorded live at the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden in the summer of 2022 (Nos. 1 & 2) and 2023 (Nos. 3 & 4), during La Capitale d’Été festival. The concerts were warmly received, with Der Tagesspiegel noting that the COE and Nézet-Séguin 'throw off historical ballast to reveal the compositional core ... no dark, Germanic heaviness, but transparency, bright colors and clearly articulated phrasing'.

Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Paavo Järvi

To mark the 150th anniversary of Schoenberg's birth and the centenary of Fauré's death, Järvi and his Frankfurt orchestra present their works inspired by Maurice Maeterlinck's 1892 play: Schoenberg's symphonic poem from 1903 (composed after Richard Strauss suggested the play as a possible subject for an orchestral work) and the suite of incidental music which Fauré composed at the request of Mrs Patrick Campbell (the first English Mélisande) for the London premiere of the play in 1898.
