Obituary, Leif Segerstam (1944-2024)

Leif Segerstram in action, conducting with characterThe prolific Finnish conductor, composer and instrumentalist Leif Segerstam has died, at the age of 80.

Segerstam leaves a legacy of over 370 symphonies, and recordings covering his own music as well as that of his contemporaries and the core repertoire in which he garnered significant praise, including works by Brahms and Sibelius. He appeared as guest conductor with orchestras across the world, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony, and he also conducted at numerous opera houses. Instantly recognisable for his mane of white hair, Segerstam was known for his vibrant, energetic and temperamental performances.

Earlier this year, Ondine released Leif Segerstam 80 Years, offering an overview of his life as both composer and conductor.
