Anonymous 4

The female a cappella quartet Anonymous 4 was founded in New York in 1984 by Johanna Maria Rose, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, and Ruth Cunningham; their debut recording An English Ladymass: Medieval Chant and Polyphony was released on Harmonia Mundi the following year, and the group went on to make over two dozens recordings on the label, including Eleven Thousand Virgins (an album of music by Hildegard von Bingen), Wolcome Yule, and Secret Voices: Music from the Las Huelgas Codex (‘It is not just that their tuning is astonishing...It is also that they have four very distinctive voices that manage to blend perfectly and balance perfectly without at any point losing clarity’ – Gramophone).

Though medieval music was the group’s main focus, they also commissioned and premiered numerous new works from composers including David Lang, Steve Reich, John Tavener, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The group disbanded in 2015.
