The American mezzo Denyce Graves was born in Washington in 1964. Following studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory, she spent time at Wolf Trap Opera and the Houston Opera Studio, making her first appearance at Covent Garden in 1994 as Carmen (which along with Saint-Saëns’s Dalila would become her signature-role) and her Metropolitan Opera debut the following year in the same role. Graves’s repertoire also encompasses Baba the Turk in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther, and numerous Verdi roles including Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera, Amneris in Aida and Azucena in Il trovatore.
