Alexandrina Pendatchanska (who also performs under the name Alex Penda) was born into a musical family in Sofia in 1970 and studied singing with her mother (the soprano Valerie Popova, a regular fixture at La Scala in the early 1980s) and at the Bulgaria National School of Music. At just 17, she made her operatic debut as Violetta in Bulgaria; her international breakthrough (as Donizetti’s Lucia) came two years later in Bilbao. Endowed with a dark but agile voice, Penda specialises in dramatic coloratura repertoire including Mozart’s Donna Elvira, Vitellia and Elettra, Rossini’s ‘Colbran’ roles, and the title-role in Handel’s Agrippina (which she recorded for Harmonia Mundi under René Jacobs in 2010); since the mid-2010s she has been moving steadily into heavier territory, with assignments including Verdi’s Lady Macbeth, Amelia (Un ballo in mascheraand Elisabetta (Don Carlo), the title-role in Tosca, and Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana.
