Aleksandrs Antonenko

Nationality: Latvian

Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko was born in Riga in 1975 and began his career as a chorus-member at Latvian National Opera; after winning the Latvian Great Music award in 2003, he became in increasing demand internationally for roles including Cavaradossi, Sergey in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the Prince in Rusalka (with which he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2009) , Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and Canio in Pagliacci.

His discography includes Luigi in Il tabarro from Covent Garden (winner of the Opera category at the 2013 Gramophone Awards), Turandot from La Scala under Riccardo Muti, Tosca from Dresden under Christian Thielemann, and Otello from The Met under Yannick Nézet-Séguin (‘he colours and phrases with care and expressiveness’ – Classical Music).
