The American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky was born in Illinois in 1969 and studied in California and Tanglewood before enrolling on the Young Artist Program at the Metropolitan Opera in 1995. She is particularly associated with dramatic bel canto roles such as Donizetti’s three Tudor Queens and Bellini’s Norma, which she has performed at the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera (her 2017 performance at the latter house, which was broadcast into cinemas all over the world, was described by The Telegraph as ‘a brave, forceful reading, admirably paced and sturdily projected’, whilst the New York Times praised her ‘bright, powerful voice and dramatic fervor’).

Her discography includes an album of Verdi arias with Constantine Orbelian and the Philharmonia of Russia on Delos, Leonora in Il Trovatore from The Met (‘Radvanovsky is at the top of her form vocally and dramatically, with consistently breathtaking musicality and stage presence’ – MusicWebInternational), and Norma from the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
