Hugo Ticciati

Born: 12th April 1980

Hugo Ticciati was born in London into a musical family in 1980 (his brother is the conductor Robin Ticciati, and his grandfather was also a conductor and composer), and began learning the violin aged five. At 19 he turned down a place to read music at Cambridge in favour of studying with Russian violinist Nina Balabina in Sweden, where he studied for four years in almost complete seclusion; his musicianship is strongly informed by meditation and yoga, and his study of Eastern and European philosophy.

Contemporary music plays a key role in his repertoire, and he has premiered works written for him by composers including Judith Weir, peteris Vaks and Erkki-Sven Tüür. In 2011 he founded the O/MODǝRNT Festival at the rococo Confidencen theatre in Sweden; his debut recording with the festival’s ensemble, White Light – The Space Between, was released on Signum in 2018, and includes music by Arvo Pärt, The Beatles, and John Tavener as well as Raag Bhairaviwhich he describes as ‘a twenty-minute ‘grand improvisation’ around Indian melodies’ .
