Eldbjørg Hemsing
Born: 16th February 1990, Nord-Aurdal, Norway
Nationality: Norwegian
The Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing was born in Valdres in 1990 and trained at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo, making her concerto debut with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra aged just 11. Alongside her classical training, Hemsing learned the Hardanger fiddle and has a keen interest in folk music, which was partially responsible for bringing her together with the Chinese composer Tan Dun, whose concertos Fire Ritual and Rhapsody and Fantasia she premiered in 2018 and recorded with the composer and the Oslo Philharmonic for BIS the following year. Hemsing’s discography also includes the Dvořák Violin Concerto and Suk Fantasy with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra (‘a splendid combination of purity and sweeping, Heifetz-like intensity’ – The Strad), and Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Hjalmar Borgström’s little-known Violin Concerto of 1914.
