José Cura was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1962. He trained as a guitarist and conductor, having originally set out to pursue a career in rugby, and only began serious vocal training in his twenties. His first professional engagements were in contemporary repertoire, including works by Henze and Bibalo, but he came to international prominence in 1994 after winning the International Operalia Competition: major house debuts followed, including Stiffelio at Covent Garden and Turiddu at the Met. His imposing physical presence, stage charisma and dark, weighty timbre have brought him considerable success in heroic spinto roles, and he is particularly renowned as Otello, Samson, Radames and Calaf.

Cura enjoys a flourishing conducting career alongside his operatic work, often conducting and singing on the same programme, and is also heavily involved with education work and the development of young singers: he works closely with British Youth Opera and New Devon Opera, amongst others, and is a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He is also a keen body-builder and Kung-Fu black-belt.
