Dame Ninette de Valois (1898-2001), known simply as "Madam", was quite simply the most influential figure in British ballet history. After dancing with Diaghilev's Ballet Russe, she founded her Academy of Choreographic Art in 1926, then ran the Sadler's Wells Ballet, and was Director of what became The Royal Ballet until her retirement in 1963
