For his Deutsche Grammophon debut album Ingolf Wunder, the audience-favourite at the 2010 Chopin International Competition, presents here the repertoire which thrilled his Warsaw listeners.

With his elegant, cultivated and at the same time unpredictable playing, great stage presence and friendly open personality he quickly became the darling of the audience, the critics in Poland and the international press.

In Warsaw, Ingolf Wunder was also awarded prizes for the best performance of a concerto and of the Polonaise-Fantasy. Wunder is the first German-speaking finalist and prize winner of the Chopin Competition in 73 years.

Reporting from the competition, Sunday Telegraph critic John Allison declared that Wunder has “everything one wants to hear in a Chopin player . . . an absolutely beautiful sense of tone and huge musical imagination, coupled with incredible virtuosity”

His touch is always healthy, never harsh or aggressive; attacks and releases are remarkably even...[The performances] are sophisticated, suave, unerringly beautiful, models of musical clarity and textual fidelity. He begins this Chopin recital with a deeply considered account of the B minor Sonata, the tempos of the opening and closing movements controversially cautious, but enabling him to voice even the most challenging passages with a lovely warmth and clarity...The rest is equally impressive. Although Wunder’s speeds are more conventional, every piece is again thoughtfully shaped, and his passage work in the andante spianato is dazzling.

This debut for Deutsche Grammophon allows us all to judge his competition pieces...the Scherzo [of the Piano Sonata No. 3] alone moves from rippling, ebullient industry to soul-searching intimacy, and back again, within three minutes, Wunder displaying a poise and tonal command way beyond his tender years.
