In a performance that achieves an uncanny mix of strength and vulnerability, Christopher Purves is marvellous as Walt. By turns formidable and moving, his performance is never less than deeply expressive. Donald Kaasch brings a striking lyricism and affecting poignancy to the role of the pitiable Dantine. Marie McLaughlin is in fine voice as Walt’s wife Lillian, a part she sings with depth and conviction.
