Fieri Consort has launched its debut album, Tears of a Lover, featuring madrigals by Marenzio and Monteverdi and a new work by contemporary composer Ben Rowarth.

Founded in 2012, Fieri Consort has evolved into one of the United Kingdom’s most exciting young vocal groups, offering a unique blend of technical precision and theatrical innovation.

Performing without a conductor, Fieri presents innovative and engaging programmes, and specialises in the rich and varied tradition of 16th and 17th century Italian repertoire. Performing a cappella, accompanied by early instruments, with guests and even, memorably, with members of their audiences, Fieri’s interpretations are always ingenious and informed by the collective experience and knowledge of the group.

Ten madrigals by Marenzio receive spacious, emotionally mature readings, but it is Ben Raworth’s Turn, a fascinating commentary on the Lamento d’Arianna in four interpolated sections, that impresses with truly madrigalian expression and depth: capturing a split-second of emotion in a brilliantly sustained, stop-frame foil to Monteverdi’s plangent masterpiece.
