About

The art of the Swiss pianist of Hungarian origin Geza Anda, which is as unmistakable as it is elusive, is revealed even more impressively in the concert recordings of his career spanning almost 35 years than in the studio recordings, many of which have remained a reference.

The numerous recordings that have survived paint a picture of an artist who is committed to unconditional dedication and great expressivity. This is impressively demonstrated by the live recordings of Mozart's Concerto K. 456 and Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1, released here for the first time, which occupy a special place in Anda's oeuvre.

Both concertos are associated with Karl Bohm on the podium: Anda worked with Bohm, as far as is known, three times; two of these stellar musical moments are presented here for the first time.

In the Mozart concerto he presents himself with a fluid, light and clearly sparkling playing. Karl Böhm accompanies with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with particularly beautifully and substantially shaped string textures. The Andante is expressive and characterised by sublimated pain, which also shows temporary after-effects in the finale. While the woodwinds make significant contributions, the strings again stand out, whose substance is no longer achieved in many modern recordings, especially those with historical instruments, and can seem downright puny compared to what Böhm achieves here.

Klassik Heute

It is often said that a symphony represents the creation of a world - here one understands this assertion. It is like a joint titanic struggle, the piano and orchestra intertwine so intensely, in between there is a downright exuberant joy - if such a term could even be appropriate for Brahms - at the end there is a veritable final storm. The orchestra begins the second movement in a wonderfully flowing manner with an undertow effect, to which the piano responds meaningfully and emphatically "talking" and then continues its dialogue, singing and musing. Where there was previously a joint struggle, there is now a joint conversation. The finale is surprisingly bright.
