Beginner's Guides, Breedlove: Body Sizes Explained

The guitar's body shape and size significantly impact its sound and performance. Bigger is not necessarily better, just different.

Everybody's shape is suited to particular players and situations. Acoustic guitars come in four general shapes: travellers, parlours, auditoriums, and dreadnoughts.

Small body instruments, like travellers and parlours, are often good choices for first time guitarists and those with smaller frames, but they are also favoured by many experienced artists for their balanced sound, nuanced tones and "couch-friendly" dimensions.

Mid-sized auditoriums, as you may expect, are versatile guitars that can do just about anything, from hard strumming to delicate finger picking. It’s almost impossible to go wrong with a mid-sized guitar for a player at any level.

Finally, dreadnoughts, named after an early 20th century battleship, are not exactly subtle—they're big guitars with a big sound that can fill a room.

Breedlove Body Shapes:

Thirty years ago, Breedlove introduced a completely unique redesign of the traditional auditorium-style guitar. Breedlove called it the Concert, and it’s the most popular body shape. Over the past three decades, Breedlove have come up with three other befitting body shapes in different sizes.

Companion—A version of the Travel Guitar. This travel-ready, easy-playing, diminutive guitar sounds and feels like a full-size instrument. It’s perfect for a young student starting out or to stash for a road trip. The Companion is the ultimate travel-size guitar, thanks to its scaled-down body and with a 23.5-inch scale length.

Concertina—A version of the Parlour. On the smaller side, this exquisitely comfortable and welcoming guitar fits smaller hands, but remains dazzling enough dynamically.

Concert—A version of the Auditorium. The one that started it all—a light, resonant body shape that marries superior sound, supreme playability, and ergonomic comfort. The Breedlove Concert remains the ultimate all around, versatile guitar.

Concerto—A version of the classic Dreadnought. The Concerto modernises the big guitar, with a new profile aimed at reducing fatigue while producing a giant, lush tone.
