Take Art Tatum, Tom & Jerry and video game music, and you'll end up with Hiromi Uehara. Known professionally as Hiromi, the Japanese pianist and composer's remarkable talent and vibrant performances at the keys have captivated audiences around the globe for over two decades. Born in Hamamatsu in 1979, her musical journey began at a young age, demonstrating an extraordinary ability at the piano that hinted at a promising future in music.

Growing up in a family that encouraged her musical interests, Hiromi started taking classical piano lessons when she was just six years old. Her natural aptitude and dedication quickly setting her apart from her peers, she had already performed with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra by the age of 14. However, it was her encounter with jazz that truly defined her path. Introduced to the genre by her piano teacher, Hiromi was captivated by its complexity and emotional depth.

In 1999, Hiromi moved to the United States to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, a decision that would profoundly shape her career. At Berklee, she studied under the tutelage of jazz legends such as Ahmad Jamal and Richard Evans. Jamal, in particular, became a significant mentor, helping her refine her style and encouraging her to explore the full extent of her creativity. During her time at Berklee, Hiromi also crossed paths with Chick Corea, who invited her to perform with him on several occasions, further propelling her into the spotlight.

Hiromi's debut album, Another Mind, was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2003. With a measured balance of subtlety and hard-hitting emotions scattered throughout her compositions, the record showcased her virtuosity and unique fusion of jazz with classical, rock and avant-garde elements. The energetic and innovative music on the album earned her several awards, including Jazz Album of the Year at the Japan Gold Disc Awards.

Following this initial success, Hiromi continued to release a series of acclaimed albums, both as a solo artist and with her band, Sonicbloom. Recordings like Brain (2004), Spiral (2006) and Time Control (2007) further solidified her reputation as a fearless innovator in the jazz world. Her ability to blend genres seamlessly and her dynamic, high-energy performances have made her a favourite at jazz festivals and concert halls worldwide.

One of Hiromi's most significant endeavours in recent years was 'The Trio Project', featuring bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips. Their chemistry and technical prowess resulted in several outstanding albums, including Voice (2011), Move (2013) and Spark (2016). Each of these releases showcases Hiromi's growth as a composer and performer, with intricate compositions that continue to push the boundaries of jazz.

Throughout her career, Hiromi has received numerous accolades, including several Grammy nominations and awards from the Jazz Journalists Association. Her music has been celebrated for its technical brilliance and boundary-pushing innovation. Despite her success, Hiromi remains humble and committed to her craft, perpetually exploring new musical landscapes and inspiring audiences with every performance. This journey from a prodigious young pianist in Japan to an internationally acclaimed jazz artist is a story of talent, perseverance and relentless creativity. Her music transcends genres and defies expectations, making her one of the most exciting and influential musicians of her generation.
