The Arditti Quartet was formed in London in 1974 and quickly established a reputation for championing late twentieth-century and contemporary chamber music; they have worked closely with composers including Brian Ferneyhough, Morton Feldman, Iannis Xenakis, Pascal Dusapin and Gavin Bryars (whose first string quartet was composed for them). Their discography includes the complete string quartets of Hans Abrahamsen, Gyorgy Ligeti, and Hans Werner Henze (now sadly no longer available), Harrison Birtwistle’s Pulse Shadows (which won a Gramophone Award in 2002), Stockhausen’s ‘Helicopter Quartet’ (available on DVD from Medici Arts), John Cage’s 44 Harmonies from Apartment House 1776, and Thomas Adès’s Piano Quintet (recorded in 2005 with the composer at the piano).
