BADBADNOTGOOD return with their highly anticipated new album, Talk Memory, a psychedelic jazz record that explores balance and harmony through musical improvisation. Collaborators include legendary composer Arthur Verocai and contemporary icons such as Terrace Martin, Karriem Riggins and Laraaji.

It seems a bit more tense and rhythmically tricky than some of the other tracks, yet the harmonious arrangements help it all flow smoothly. Throughout the album, BADBADNOTGOOD and their guest collaborators flesh out the sonic canvas without taking away from the raw energy of the performances.

With Talk Memory, BBNG has constructed an album closer to the vein of jazz than the genre roads they travel as producers for others. Yet, they maintain their congenial approach, working with Arthur Verocai adding string arrangements or Karriem Riggins doubling up on drums or the texture of Brandee Younger’s harp. It lands these fellas as still accomplished composers and even tighter performers.

Talk Memory feels like the band drawing more on those first few albums, eschewing the wider exposure that vocal collaborators brought them and focusing in on the excitement of improvisation and dense instrumental composition. Far from hitting the reset button, though, BADBADNOTGOOD show that they’re just as curious as ever.
