On the 150th anniversary of the death of Ferruccio Busoni, Henle is issuing one of his most important original works for piano solo.

The Fifth Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, emerged from several earlier versions. The double character indicated in the sobriquet “Héroïde élégiaque” is based on the two contrary themes: a “heroic” theme in minor and an “elegiac” theme in major, seasoned with characteristics of Liszt’s “style hongrois” such as augmented seconds and sharp dotted rhythms.

Schubert’s Ständchen (Serenade) on Rellstab’s poem not only numbers among the most well-known art songs but is still a real hit today in Liszt’s arrangement for piano solo. Initially published in 1838 in a version without ossias, the arrangement began its triumph on the piano by 1840 at the latest – probably not least thanks to Liszt’s obliging addition of easier variants – as numerous editions published throughout Europe during the composer’s lifetime testify.

This volume contains all the songs and duets by Pauline Viardot-García with original Spanish texts. It includes her original songs, songs based on (anonymous) popular music and arrangements of instrumental works by other composers and involving a substantial change of the piece: instrumental works turned into songs and were added with Spanish text.

The Mendelssohn family cultivated a very special form of house music in their garden cottage on the family estate: the so-called Sonntagsmusiken (Sunday musicales). Perhaps this inspired Fanny Hensel to publish the six songs for mixed choir, collectively entitled Gartenlieder (Garden Songs).

The three etudes offer the accomplished oboist a variety of opportunities to demonstrate their technical and musical skills. The nearly ten-minute sequence of movements has clear references to South American music and impresses with its strong rhythmic and melodic contrasts. The piano part is of medium difficulty and offers rewarding pianistic challenges.

Highly regarded for the finesse and elegance of her spirited, humorous writing, the composer Jeanine Rueff wrote numerous works for a variety of instruments, collaborating also with the renowned classical saxophonist Marcel Mule. A good part of her catalogue is devoted to pedagogical pieces, like this lovely Chanson et Passepied for alto saxophone and piano which has become a must for players at an intermediate level.

A composer and conductor of genius, Eugène Bozza left us several operas, ballets, large-scale symphonic, and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. En forêt, evoking a hunting party in the forest was written for an entrance exam for the Conservatoire de Paris; this is why it calls for all kinds of technical challenges.
