Watch the video below to hear Richard Blackford introduce his work, Pieta.

At the core of Blackford’s work is a setting of the Stabat Mater; but it also includes settings of two relevant poems by the celebrated Russian poet Anna Akhmatova from her poem cycle Requiem. The poems echo the words in Stabat Mater reflecting the grief of a mother for her son Lev, a student at Leningrad University, who, in 1938, at the height of Stalin’s terror, was arrested in his dormitory room and shipped to an Arctic labour camp.

Available Format: Sheet Music

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Richard BlackfordRichard Blackford is one of the foremost concert and media composers in Europe. His concert works are performed regularly around the world and his music for film and television is broadcast frequently in almost every European country. His much-acclaimed Pietà, a remarkable setting of the Stabat Mater with additional poems by the Ukrainian poet Anna Akhmatova, won the Ivor Novello Composer Award in 2020 for the Choral Category and has already received multiple performances. World-renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann writes of Pietà: "Richard Blackford has created an outstanding choral work: a passionate and personal tribute in memory of all who suffer from violence, suppression and political persecution, which has deeply impressed me. Finally a modern composer who is not afraid of writing beautiful and touching music!"

Recent highlights include: the commission and premiere of Songs Of Nadia Anjuman for soprano and string orchestra by Britten Sinfonia, Clarissa’s Tango (for violin and pianos) premiered, recorded and filmed by award winning young soloist, Clarissa Bevilaqua.
