For this edition Henle consulted the autograph score as well as the original orchestral parts which presumably contain the musical text of the concerto as Bach himself performed it. The piano reduction contains the solo part with carefully chosen fingerings by Michael Schneidt, plus a piano accompaniment that Johannes Umbreit has arranged so as to be practical and easily playable.

Each composition is dedicated to an important figure in Nigel's life. Improvisation from the player is encouraged, but not obligatory.

During a concert tour through California in early 1920, Prokofiev composed five songs with piano accompaniment and textless voice parts, which appeared in print as Five Songs without Words op. 35 and with a dedication to the soprano Nina Koshetz. The quasi-instrumental conception of the work as vocalises accompanied by piano suggested an arrangement for violin and piano, which the composer then indeed undertook in 1925.
