'Der getreue Musikmeister' (The faithful Music Master) occupies a special place in the history of musical publications, since, asfar as we know it was the first regularly appearing musical periodical. A 'Lection', or lesson, was published every two weeks in the form of a four-page leaflet presenting Vocal and Instrumental music in various scorings.Twenty-five of these leaflets are still extant today, bound as a volume with a preface and index.
The Recorder part of the Sonata in F major is notated throughout in the French Violin clef (g' on the first line). Thismethodof notation had become customary towards the end of the 17th century. It reduced the number of ledger lines necessary for the upper octave of the recorder, which was frequently used at that time.
The present edition omitsarbitrary alterations of the musical text; the notation of this edition has only been altered to conform to modern conventions.
