Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart (1791-1844) was the musically gifted son of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After his Vienna apprenticeship with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, Antonio Salieri, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and others he entered the employ of Galician noble families as a piano teacher. From Lviv he prepared to become known as a freelance musician appearing under the name "W. A. Mozart Sohn". He composed several contributions to the "Dilettanten-Concerte", subscription concerts in the Summer months in Lviv since 1812, for instance this composition.The theme is taken from the first of two Marches from the first act of the 1803 Paris opera "Aline, Reine de Golconde" by Henri-Montan Berton. Already one year later the opera had its first performance in Vienna; both court theaters staged a total of 20 performances until February 1805. The March's theme had duly attained a certain degree of popularity in its "oriental" operatic context, and several composers (including Mozart himself) wrote variation cycles on it. This striking variation cycle - today known as WV VI:12 - is a welcome addition to the original Early Romantic - Biedermeier recorder repertoire.
