To all intents and purposes, Jean Sibelius wrote his Violin Concerto practically twice. To begin with, there are glaring discrepancies between the original version of 1903/04, which the composer self-critically withdrew immediately after the first performances, and the revision of 1905, which was so successful that posterity wonders why Sibelius composed only one work for this genre. The Complete Edition volume allows us to make a direct comparison for the first time: both versions of the Violin Concerto are printed consecutively and supplied with in-depth comments both in the Preface and the Critical Report.
