Slow passage, low prospect was commissioned by the 2004 Aldeburgh Festival for Christopher Purves and pianist Andrew West. Having agreed that our cycle should take as its subject aspects of the Suffolk landscape and various impingements upon it (including Sizewell B nuclear power station, environmental pollution and even the festival itself), Lavinia Greenlaw and I collaborated closely to produce five songs, each with a single, clear affekt. Both words and music allude to concerns (literary and musical) in the work of Benjamin Britten, upon whose piano the work was first performed.
