Commissioned by the Netherland-America Foundation for Entropy (Amsterdam/New York).
I wrote col while in residence at Blue Mountain Center in the Adirondacks (New York State) in 2002. When I wasn't writing music there, I was out hiking. I learned the word 'col' - a pass or depression in a mountain range - on one of these hikes, and thought it would be a good title for this piece, in which stretches of somewhat elastic musical material join together chains of distinct musical peaks.
