I : Dialogue
II : Monologue
III : Epilogue
The overall form is close to that of the traditional sonata. The movements' titles outline their individual structures, which, in the case of the Monologue and the Epilogue, are in their different ways variations on material stated in the first movement. So the Monologue expands germinal lines into a long viola solo; the Epilogue, in Rondo form, is a varied recapitulation of all before. As the titles suggest, almost all rhythmic detail is derived from speech rhythms – poetic, contemplative or dramatic.
