In Gloucester Cathedral there are a number of stained glass windows commemorating Herbert Howells. Garland was commissioned by families with close connections to the city and so it seemed appropriate to use the musical fragments in the windows as the material for these three piano pieces. Doubly so, as the first performance took place in the cathedral, in 2003, with the composer at the piano. The sustained nature of the music played, in a small way, with the resonant acoustic.
