This work for string orchestra originated in a work for viol consort I wrote in 1999: it proved beyond the (very fine) ensemble for which it was intended, but was later taken up by another fine group, Fretwork, who played it several times. The piece seemed to demand, however, a larger ensemble, and was first heard thus, conducted by Nicola Moro and his 'Lux Aeterna' Orchestra in KCL Chapel, March 2011. The title (culled from 'Jane Eyre' and referring to Hindustani script) sounded good - the piece is a Byrdian/Purcellian Fantazia writ large: the various sections, some homophonic, some highly contrapuntal, intermingle, their energy to be eventually discharged in a ground bass culminating in a dance-like coda.
