Originally created for a binaural recording set-up for the soundwalk Wou D’Uelzecht-Esch with 6 instrument-stations set up clockwise around a binaural microphone, with each part recorded individually.
Created for Esch2022 and composed for Guy Frisch (United Instruments of Lucilin). First Recording by Philippe Mergen at Centre national de l’audiovisuel Luxembourg (CAN).
Use only metal percussion instruments or objects.
Use a stopwatch to keep track of time.
The numbers refer to different percussion instruments or instrument groups/stations/tables/set-ups.
Six shades of grey - from light grey to black refer to the intensity of playing, with black being the most intense.
Intensity here encompasses both the dynamics and the frequency of actions performed. For example a light grey field might yield few actions of a low dynamic, whereas a mid-grey might bring lots of actions of low dynamic, or few actions of a louder dynamic, always considering what else is going on too. Each sound/action will thus be characterised by its intensity within the overall dynamic and energy of the music. If performing solo, move freely from one instrument to another, playing them simultaneously or consecutively.
Feel free to set up in the midst or surrounding the audience. A traditional concert set-up is also fine.
