This Christmas seasonal offering was commissioned by Ronald Corp and the New London Children's Choir in 1992 as a companion piece to Benjamin Britten's
St. Nicholas. Like Britten's 1948 cantata, this tells the story of the 3rd-4thC bishop's maritime travels and attributed adventures, here compacted in seven minutes.
Postcards from St Nick has the saintly yet frustrated bishop relay his experiences nearly two millennia ago to a 20thC child via a series of postcards (or is the child-speaker St. Nick himself?). The chorus - firmly routed in today's society - comments on each postcard with a purely fiscal worldview.
Postcards from St Nick was premiered in November 1992 at St John's Smith Square, London by the choir, and subsequently broadcast on numerous occasions by BBC radio in the UK and Europe. It was commissioned with support of the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust.
