In Frank Capra’s 1946 film
It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey is subjected to a dark night of the soul. At a crucial moment, he reaches into his pocket to discover Zuzu’s petals, petals which had fallen off of his daughter’s bedside flower. Bailey then embraces every aspect - good, quirky, challenging and unfortunate - of his eventful life. Part of that life was dancing to "The Charleston", a song composed by American composer James Price Johnson in 1923 which features memorably in Capra's film.
Lasting five minutes,
Zuzu's Petals traverses a wide array of emotions and experiences. It was premiered on 6 April 2019 at the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, Manchester, UK by John Turner (recorder), Robert Simpson (oboe), Benedict Holland (violin) and Jennifer Langridge (cello). It will be released in Summer 2020 by Divine Art Recording group on a tribute album in memory of John Manduell, musician and former director of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
