“Rhythm, Fallin’ Blues” is a short piano piece commissioned by Elena Rui and Boosey & Hawkes.

Inspired by R&B, I explored a single overlapping blues scale. The spine of this piece is the continuous descending crotchet scale which gets louder and louder as it journeys from the top to the bottom of the piano. The acciaccaturas plot their own version of the scale, rising at the top of the piano, and should be played lightly, with a nonchalant funkiness about them.

The cluster-chords (also based on the same scale), are made from the first five pitches of each notes major or minor scale. The piece is light, playful and should be played with lots of pedal.
