Written for the ensemble Decibel in 2009, the music takes the form of an introductory 'meditation' which then springs into two fast 'reflections', before returning to the concluding slow 'meditation'. The roles between the duos of Piano/Viola, and Saxophone/Percussion gradually exchange roles as the piece progresses. The piece as a whole is pinned down by a series of poly-rhythms which guide the music from under the surface for most of the piece, before being starkly exposed towards the end of the second 'reflection'.
Two Meditations and Two Reflections was first performed by Decibel, conducted by Ed Bennett in the Recital Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire as part of the Frontiers festival, March 2009.
