Commissioned by the piano duo James Willshire and Pippa Harrison who gave the first performance in Canada during their 2015 Banff residency, this short work was originally titled “Opposites Attract” which alluded to the marital status of the duo and also to the fact that piano duos often play opposite one another with the instruments interlocked. However, following the premiere, neither the players nor the composer were very happy with the title especially since there is a quite a sparky confrontational element to the music. The composer came up with “Dualogue” but Pippa Harrison suggested that, since the music has quite a sparring feel, that the differently spelt “Duelogue” would satisfy both the ‘duet’ and the ‘duel’ components: in all, hopefully, the perfect solution to the often knotty problem a composer faces when giving a piece a name.
