John White in Berlin was composed between January and March 2003 and is a single movement, lasting around 13 minutes. It is dedicated to the English composer and performer John White.

The piece is scored for electric guitar, cello, percussion and piano and makes extensive use of the electronic bow (ebow), a magnetic device commonly used by electric guitarists to produce infinite sustain. A total of five ebows are required to perform this work; the guitarist uses one, while the other four are placed on the strings inside the piano to sustain a drone, which underpins most of the piece.

John White in Berlin was commissioned by the MaerzMusik festival for Apartment House and first performed by Apartment House on 19 March 2003 at Sophiensaele, Berlin. The performers on that occasion were Alan Thomas, Anton Lukoszevieze, Richard Benjafield and Philip Thomas.

The concert in Berlin featured a performance of John White’s classic experimental work C major chord machine.
