In orbe, ad astra extols the virtues of good kingship, using fragments of text taken from lines 13, 53-54 and 61-66 of a poem variously known as the Paderborn Epic or ‘Karolus Magnus et Leo Papa’. The Paderborn Epic was probably written around 799 and describes Charlemagne’s great achievements, in particular his rescue of Pope Leo from mortal danger. In gratitude Leo crowned Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor in 800; Charlemagne had already been crowned King of the Franks in 768 and King of the Lombards in 774.

In orbe, ad astra was written for the Deutscher Chor London, who wanted a new work to mark the coronation of King Charles III. Charlemagne was a king in a very different era, but both men seem to value wise counsel, scholarship and trans-national cooperation and it is these universal human aspirations, rather than the concept of monarchy, that In orbe, ad astra celebrates. The Deutscher Chor London, directed by Barbara Hoefling, gave the first performance of In orbe, ad astra in St Pancras New Church, London on 18th March 2023.
