My eye was drawn to a series of photographs of mundane but somehow entirely engaging suburban scenes in an unspecified part of the mid-west of the USA, vividly bringing back memories of a trip to Ohio visiting family. The photographs were loosely bound under the heading Suburban Photographic, the name of a studio and printers caught in the corner of one of the pictures. Inspired by these images and imagining them set in motion through music, these become Suburban cinematic: a hazy and distanced trip via my memory down the streets and between the houses of West Milton, Ohio.

This work was written for the Royal Academy of Music’s 200 Pieces Project at the request of Philip Cashian.

The piece was premiered by Francisca Brito at the Royal Academy of Music on 07/07/2022.
