Originally devised as a mass setting for lower voices (TTBB) this Missa Brevis was composed during the lockdown periods in 2020/21 as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world. It unashamedly sits in the ‘new pastoral’ style of choral writing except for the second movement, a Gloria setting which asks the singers to use their hands as percussive instruments whilst singing. The changes in metre, when successfully navigated, recall Latin American rhythms as a result.
This version, for SATB chorus, soprano and baritone soli with piano accompaniment, is dedicated to all the singers who have been members of The Harry Ensemble chamber choir in its first decade of existence, with grateful thanks for their dedication and willingness to ‘go on an adventure’.
A version of the same work is available for TTBB chorus, tenor and baritone soli with piano.
