'Into the Dream' was commissioned by the York Late Music Festival 2024 as part of a project to reinvent the Walter de la Mare Peacock Pie poems. Each song was partnered with a setting by Herbert Howells or Cecil Armstrong-Gibbs and premiered by Robert Rice and William Vann in February 2024.

In setting the concise text of Hide and Seek I spent some time finding my way into the poem. Eventually, after a sleepless night thinking about it, I realised that for me it describes that sometimes elusive crossing from wake into sleep. I imagine the singer lying awake, trying to conjure up soothing images of night, until eventually he drifts off ‘...into the dream of Sleep’.

Hide and seek, says the Wind,
In the shade of the woods;
Hide and seek, says the Moon,
To the hazel buds;
Hide and seek, says the Cloud,
Star on to star;
Hide and seek, says the Wave,
At the harbour bar;
Hide and seek, say I,
To myself, and step
Out of the dream of Wake
Into the dream of Sleep.
