Piano Trio No. 2 is composed very much against classical ‘backgrounds’: Haydn’s string quartets were Keeley’s model in the sprightly, lightly-scored Allegretto, Chopin’s mazurkas lie behind the final movement, and the central slow movement punctuated by scherzando outbursts is, more subtly, indebted to older models.
