Scored for string quartet, children’s chorus, and narrator, Sukey and the Mermaid tells the story of a young girl’s encounter with a female water-spirit. Based on a rare authenticated African-American folktale involving a mermaid, it also draws upon Caribbean folklore, hence the gentle reggae rhythms surfacing in the music.

During my residency at the Capital Children’s Museum in Washington, D.C., sponsored by Meet the Composer, I wrote an orchestra work using narration from several children’s books that were in an exhibit of books illustrated by minority artists. Sukey and the Mermaid, illustrated by Brian Pickney, was in this exhibit, and I wanted to eventually work with it also, but in a more intimate chamber setting. I am grateful to the Corporation of Yaddo for a residency period in August, 1998, where Sukey and the Mermaid was written.

Sukey and the Mermaid is dedicated to the Oberon String Quartet, and to mermaids everywhere.
