The composer and pianist Percy Sherwood (1866-1939) was born in Dresden, the son of an Englishteacher and a German singer. His compositionaloutput encompassed five symphonies, concertos forpiano, violin and cello, a Requiem for solo voices andorchestra, chamber music for various combinations ofinstruments, and numerous solo piano pieces.Sherwood’s career was almost equally dividedbetween Germany and England. In the twenty-fiveyears before the outbreak of the First World WarSherwood established himself as a prominent figure inDresden’s musical life. But despite early successesSherwood never gained a lasting foothold in London’smusical life despite settling there after the outbreak ofthe First World War. The Sonata in C minor for two pianos was notpublished during the composer’s lifetime. Themanuscript is held by the Bodleian Library. It was firstperformed by Sherwood and Hermann Scholtz underthe auspices of the Dresden Tonkünstler-Verein on 27April 1896.
