I felt a need, and relished the opportunity, to exploitmy admiration for Clarke’s idiosyncrasies after havingperformed the Sonata so many times throughout mylife – and the Dialogue with Rebecca Clarke, writtenin 2007, for the fine Moldovan violist Mikhail Mouller,was enormous fun to write. There are somerecognizable motifs and rhythms, lifted from thesonata and re-used, combined with my own originalthemes, and my harmonies sometimes follow hergeneral example. I wish I could really have had aconversation with the composer – but this concertshowpiece has to make do ... John York, March 2016
