While on his Italian honeymoon in 1891, Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) came across Titian's painting The Miracle of a Jealous Husband in Padua. The result was his first choral work, HYMNUS AMORIS, OP. 12, scored for soloists, choir and orchestra. The text from folklorist Axel Olrik, based on a draft written by Nielsen, was translated into Latin by Johan Ludvig Heiberg. He defended using the Latin language because of what he perceived as its emphasis of universality over personal expression. The piece premiered on April 27, 1897 at the Music Society in Copenhagen under the direction of the composer. Instrumentation: 3.3(3rd d.EH).3.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(2): Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Soli SS, Children Chor, Mx Chor.
