In 1972, Lloyd wrote the first draft of TheTransformation of that Naked Ape. He had beenreading Desmond Morris’s book, The Naked Ape (1967)and the idea for a solo piano piece came to him. In hisown words, ‘I had always refused to accept the notionthat we humans are just superior animals so this bookdecided me to stand up and be counted amongst thosewho believe another dimension must be added toexplain our natures’. In 1987, the composer revised thework for the present recording. There are sixmovements in the piece, entitled ‘Her Hair’, ‘HerTongue’, ‘Her Eyes’, ‘Her Brain’, ‘her Mind’ and ‘HerSoul’. If this sequence suggests a progression from thephysical to the spiritual, such a development is alsoapparent in the music. Hence the helter-skelterscherzo-like frivolity of ‘Her Hair’ and the floridintrospection of ‘Her Tongue’ give way gradually tothe tender lyricism of ‘Her Mind’ and the brio andjoyfulness of the closing movement, ‘Her Soul’.
